MARVEL's THE AVENGERS (2012) AND TEAM DEVELOPMENT
Hello everyone. It is such a pleasure to interacting with you all through comments and on personal chats. I am grateful for your response for my last two posts.
Today’s topic is Avengers movie (2012) and its relatedness to Team Development Process.
Now I am sure many among this blog's readers, does like Hollywood movies and especially Marvel’s. The whole team behind Marvel movie has done an amazing job. One of the milestone movie in this franchise is Marvel's The Avengers released in 2012.
I have seen that movie several times. So while thinking about it I observed one interesting thing. And that is , how this movie gets evolved and reflects the concept of TEAM DEVELOPMENT STAGES.
Last semester I learned this concept. Basically this concept related to how teams evolve from initial stage to its dissolution. It mainly has four phases. Later on additional phase has been added. And even the movie evolves like this stages does. How ? My observations are as follows :
Stage 1 Forming : As the name suggests, its initial stage to gather the team of individuals who may or may not be known to each other.
Movie Stage : Like the movie begins when Nick Fury of S.H.I.E.L.D. realizes that the world is under shadow of alien attack. Then he calls selective superheroes around the world. He plans to protect our world against this attack and avoid the further alien invasion. He sends his team to have these super heroes (in their own capacity) to gather at his battle ship.
Stage 2 Storming : This is the stage where the group members starts to analyze other members and the situation. This analysis is generally based upon individual past experiences,conviction and vibes from others. And then some of them have differences with each other. Some get along, while some remain neutral.
Movie Stage : Once formally introduced to each other, some of them get along. Like Bruce Banner and Stark. Some of them already know each other. Hawkeye and Black Widow ( we realize that in later stage ). And some are just old fashioned but yet very useful. Captain America. And some are out of the sky. Literally. Thor.
But like all self made men and women they also have their egos. Plus they are not aware that why they are being summoned to be together. They have (except black widow and Hawkeye) doubts about Nick Fury regarding his motives. And it all ends into chaos. What would you expect when you have Hulk on board. Hence completing the stage two in messy way. Giving an escape window to the God of Mischief. Loki.
Stage 3 Norming : At this stage the group comes together after the fight. Generally under guidance of the leader. And then it starts having sessions which leads to setting up rules, regulations for the group.
Movie Stage : In the second stage Nick fury loses his agent due to internal fights. He utilizes his agent's demise to motivate team avengers. Using the situation to manipulate some facts which makes them emotional. And automatically they get along with each other because now they have one common point to relate to each other. And that is Avenging the death of the fallen agent. Agent Coulson.
Stage 4 Performing : After the third stage, the group learns to coexist with each other. Rather complimenting and adjusting whenever required.
Movie Stage : We all know this stage from movie and we all have enjoyed this. A complete package of action. You name it and they have it. Guns, Bullets, Arrows, Shields, Hammers, Reactor energy, Nuke missile and Chitauri's. And even Hulk punching to Thor and how can we forget his remark to Loki, ‘Puny God’..
Just amazing !!
And then an additional and Final stage in Team Development.
Adjourning.: As the name suggests it is a phase where team members leave the team. There are two possibilities to that. Maybe they are going away to return again if required or it could be just once in a life time work/project.
Movie Stage : In the movie, after having the shwarma together and sending handcuffed Loki to where he belongs they goes their separate ways. Only to return whenever the world will need them. In words of Nick Fury, “I am not tracking their whereabouts. But they will return because they have to.”
Trust me. Such an amazing journey. Just loved this movie. And truly a milestone in superhero movie genre and in Marvel Cinematic Universe Franchise. Hope you have liked the comparison. Please let me know in the comments, your opinions.
